The Witty Hustle
I used to think that leadership is about POWER, an I used to think that leadership is about POWER, and about accomplishment. I used to think its about me, my experiences, my skill and my education. With age, and a few mistakes, I have learnt that true leadership is not at all about me. Its about how my team feels about me
.
When I was running my first startup WishWantWear, I was the office control freak 🤯. The person who could be relied on to be tenacious, to push my way through and to bulldoze people into getting things done. I was great at execution, but I felt that something was missing
.
It struck me one day recently, as I was dealing with a particularly difficult team situation at work, that those younger years - they lacked a sense of giving. I was too focused on myself, rather than on the welfare and mindset of my team. I lacked the ability to inspire and to put my team first
.
The last few years since WishWantWear have taught me a few things. And high on that list is the art of giving first
.
Good leadership is about you, the leader. Great leadership is about your team, your employees and WHO you serve. Its about lifting others up, and leaving them feeling touched, inspired and moved 🤘🏼
.
Many leaders feel that power is about who they are and about how well they can get things done. Power is often equated with control
.
What if I told you that great leaders ALSO get things done - but that true power manifests by giving freely to your followers, your team? When a leader devotes all their energy to inspiring and empowering others, Power is the byproduct. Power as a goal rarely leads to power as the result
.
I would love to hear your experiences with leadership - feel free to comment or to dm me 💌

I MISS IT! Eating out. Even if I could get the sam I MISS IT! Eating out. Even if I could get the same quality of food at home, (and I don’t), I enjoy dressing up and sashaying into packed restaurants that exude an energetic vibe 🙄
.
Do you feel nostalgic? I do
.
But, the world as we knew it is going to change. Many much loved places will close down. This is how its going to affect our carefree taken-for-granted, much loved restaurant adventures
.
Sharing platters? Forget it - They became all the rage over the last decade or so - but, individualised portions will take precedence .
Business models will change with faster moves to off-premise food delivery. Uncooked food deliveries at home will increase. In China, Pizza Hut has started delivering uncooked steaks
.
Eating out is about to become more expensive. Restaurants will reduce the number of tables, but they will still need to cover overheads. With an increasingly wary and demanding consumer, its likely that meal prices will rise 💵
.
Safety will take precedence in all interactions - from cleaning of credit cards when handing over for payment, to cleaning it upon return, frequent changes of gloves, provisions of sanitisation trays
.
Last but not least - how will spaces change? We have all seen the pictures of that restaurant in China that had plastic separators between tables. Thats not very far from the expected reality
.
👉🏼Spacing will increase between tables
👉🏼Partitions are very likely in many places
👉🏼Cutlery and glassware cleaning at the tableside
👉🏼Contactless payments
👉🏼Voice enabled tablets with menus
.
Leave me a comment if you think of any other ways restaurants could be affected

Mark Zuckerberg offered to sell Facebook to MySpac Mark Zuckerberg offered to sell Facebook to MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe for $75m. Chris said “no”
.
Blockbuster refused an advertising partnership with Netflix 🙀
.
Kodak filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Kodak’s digital camera meant filminess photography and it was a direct threat to their main revenue source - films
.
Macy’s was presented with a bold idea in 1980 - why not start a TV channel selling their merchandise? But Macy’s thought selling in traditional stores was what consumers wanted. QVC is now one of Macy’s biggest competitors
.
Palm PDAs we’re all the rage. But, the company failed to realise that customers wanted wireless voice and data. Palm faded out as Blackberry and Apple launched their devices
.
Yahoo failed to follow consumer trends and improve their user experience. They remained complacent in their glory and did not realise that sustaining glory means keeping up with times
.
Blackberry remained stuck in time, protecting their arched keyboard while other companies were trying to keep up with the touch screen trend
.
The list goes on - Toys”R”Us, Nokia, AOL, TiVo, Xerox. These companies FAILED to move with the times. They ignored macro indicators of a changing world, and this eventually led to their doom
.
Yes, failure can be a downer and its always hard to accept change. But it is better to try and fail, than to not take a risk that may lead to change
.
What can you do to remain ahead of the game?
. 👉🏼 Embrace failure as an important step towards success 👉🏼 Stay in the present, but keep an eye on future trends 👉🏼 Observe macro trends , and adopt them 👉🏼 Read your consumer - don’t take their changing preferences for granted 👉🏼 Look deeper into your space - do you see smaller innovative companies coming up 👉🏼 Promote a company culture of innovation and growth

I am afraid of bumping into people - are you? 😨 I am afraid of bumping into people - are you? 😨
.
As countries relax lockdown measures, we are all facing a conundrum. I want to get back to work, but I’m afraid of being in close proximity with other people. What if they are sick and they dont know it?

As the world moves into a different era of anti-touch sensitivity, a number of gadgets are being created to address the new world order .
My favourites 🎀
.
1. Bump - developed by @tharsus, a robotics company. Bump is a wearable device that warns people if someone else is coming closer than the safe distance of 2 metres. Imagine saying: “Two! Move back, you’re too close”
.
2. ICENI labs has a monitoring device that can detect if breathing patterns change. Its a wireless device that uses ultra wide-band radar to scan humans and their breathing patterns. Even before this pandemic struck us, the device was in clinical trials with the sleep apnea clinic in the UK. .
Its very likely that over the next year we may see multiple advances in wearable technology that will address social distancing and hygiene .
Surface cleaning robots? A robot that cleans every surface after a human touches it?
.
Glasses that can see fingerprints on surfaces? A wearable device that shows you how many people have touched a surface .
Queuing systems? So you dont have to queue and can just turn up at an appointed time?
.
Hahaha - my imagination is going into overdrive😋. What other ideas would you want to see?
.
